PhD position in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition 18 Marzo 2009
ETH Zurich, Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Zürich
Project description: The PhD project is part of an international interdisciplinary cooperation between ETH Zurich and Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) on “Agronomic Biofortification to Fight Human Zn Deficiency in Arid Regions“. The PhD project is carried out at the ETH Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems (Prof. R. Schulin) and the ETH Institute of Plant Sciences (Prof. E. Frossard), in collaboration with Dr. B. Nowack, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (Empa). The general objective of the collaboration is to investigate management practices suited to increase the zinc (Zn) density in wheat grains in order to alleviate human Zn deficiency in semi-arid to arid regions where soils are low in available Zn and human populations largely depend on cereals for Zn nutrition. The objective of the advertised PhD project is to investigate the potential of soil amendments with natural or synthetic chelants to mobilize soil Zn and to in¬crease its uptake by wheat plants. Experiments aiming at process-understanding will be performed in hydroponics and soil columns with selected organic ligands. The column experiments will also include treatments with mycorrhizal inoculation and labeling with Zn-65. Key words: zinc deficiency, chelating agents, bioavailability, rhizosphere processes, mycorrhiza, uptake and allocation of Zn in wheat, biofortification Application: Candidates send application including CV, statement of research interests and career goals, transcripts, and addresses of 2-3 potential referees by ordinary mail to Prof. Rainer Schulin, ETH Zurich, Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Universitaetstr. 16, CH-8092 Zürich, or by email to schulin en env.ethz.ch. Conditions: The successful candidate must have an MSc or equivalent degree in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry or related discipline; strong motivation for interdisciplinary research in soil science and plant nutrition is essential; background in soil chemistry, soil biology and plant nutrition is particularly welcome; team spirit. We offer a stimulating multidisciplinary, international working environment. Employment will be according to standard regulations of the ETH Zurich. Starting date is at the earliest convenience. ETH is an internationally top-ranking university, and Zurich is a city in the heart of Europe with one of the best living qualities in the world.
