Institución:ICN2:Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behavior of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for two consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022). ICN2 comprises 19 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Job Title: PhD Student

Research area or group: Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group

Description of Group/Project:

Graphene-based nanoarchitectures as quantum platforms: The last decade has witnessed impressive advances in the bottom-up synthesis of graphene-based nanostructures. The case of 1D graphene nanoribbons is an illustrative one, where all structural parameters (width, edge structure, doping, functionalization) can be controlled with atomic precision. Our group has recently brought this atomic control to 2D with the demonstration of the synthesis of a nanoporous graphene (Moreno et al. Science 360, 199, 2018). The nanomaterial, selected as "molecule of the year" by the American Chemical Society, and the demonstration of field-effect transistor made by this semiconducting graphene, was highlighted in the main scientific journals (Science Perspectives, Nature Electronics, Chemical Engineering & News, IEEE Spectrum, Nano Today). In this project we intend to bring this approach to the next level, by fusing GNRs with active quantum components (single spins, single photon emitters) in lateral
heterostructures, in order to address them (read, manipulate) with electrical currents along the GNRs channels. The project will tackle the synthesis of the hybrid nanoarchitectures, the characterization of the atomic and electronic structure, and the realization and characterization of gate-modulated devices.

Main Tasks and responsibilities:

The researcher will tackle the on-surface synthesis of the hybrid nanoarchitectures, the characterization of the atomic and electronic structure by low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), and the realization and characterization of gate-modulated devices. She/He will design experiments together with the supervisor, analyze data and write reports and drafts for publications.
