We are looking for a Postdoctoral candidate with a background in biomedical sciences, interested to apply to the Margarita Salas Programme (http://www.doctorado-comunicacion.es/novedad.php?novedad=181). If awarded, the candidate will be hosted for a period of three years in Dr. Ana Méndez lab (Universidad de Barcelona/IDIBELL). CONTACT: mendezzu en ub.edu
About the laboratory
If the fellowship is awarded the candidate will join a multidisciplinary project that will apply genetic, biochemical, proteomic and physiological techniques to study the signaling mechanisms by which photoreceptor cells of the retina respond to light and how gene defects at this level lead to different forms of human blindness. We ultimately aim to find new therapies for these disorders, that affect 1 in 4.000 people and constitute an unmet medical need.
The lab is located at the University of Barcelona, Health Science Campus of Bellvitge, and is integrated at IDIBELL and the Institute of Neuroscience of the UB. We have a strong interactive network in the area of Barcelona, with other retina research groups at the University of Barcelona, image experts at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the unit of proteomics at the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), and the Ophthalmology Units of the Sant Joan de Deu and Bellvitge Hospitals. One of the lab´s missions is to contribute to energize the integration of the genetic diagnosis in the cohort of Catalonia with the development and characterization of preclinical models of disease, to develop and assay novel therapeutic strategies.
About the role
The candidate will apply with Dr. Méndez to the Margarita Salas Programme with a research plan that aims to establish a new mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa type 10 (RP10), in which to investigate the etiology of the disease by determining nucleotide levels by HPLC and LC-MS/MS, metabolic fluxes, retinal morphometry and visual function, and on which to test phenotypic rescue with orphan drugs.
